A pragmatic approach to lateral hip pain
Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS) is a common condition that affects up to 25% of women over the age of 40. It presents as lateral hip pain and is most likely due to gluteal tendinopathy. GPS is not only associated with impairments around the hip, but also with significant negative psychosocial impacts including reduced fulltime employment and poor mental health. GTPS can be hard to treat. The current evidence supports interventions such as exercise and appropriate education (load management).
Please note that this is a 2 part course consisting of a 2 hour live lecture, delivered via zoom. This compulsory presentation is scheduled to occur at 6.00PM AEDT on Wednesday 7th May, 2025. Followed by a face to face course on the 17th May, 2025.
The aim of this course is to provide physiotherapists with:
- An accurate understanding of the pathologies that can result in lateral hip pain
- The necessary tools to make a diagnosis and evaluate the impairments that someone with lateral hip pain has, and
- Provide a range of treatment options for someone with lateral hip pain
The course brings together the current knowledge regarding the aetiology, pathology and risk factors associated with lateral hip pain, and the most recent evidence regarding its treatment.
Having established the likely underlying pathology and risk factors, the course then examines:
- the known impairments, and discusses how these likely affect the individual
- how to undertake the diagnostic and functional tests that will guide the physiotherapist in their treatment approach
In addition to recognising the ongoing nature of the pain associated with this condition, the course will cover what is known about the psychosocial issues, noting that some people may need specialist psychological interventions in addition to what a physiotherapist can offer.
Various treatment approaches are then discussed, demonstrated and practiced.
