Positive Approach to Dementia Care

This course will provide an introduction to a Positive Approach to Care, Teepa Snow's dementia support methodology for improving connection and engagement for people living with dementia.

You will explore how we can forge improved connections and engagement for people living with dementia including practical approaches that can be shared with carers of people living with dementia, with the view of minimising stress and improving connection and engagement.


Learning outcomes

  • Understand how the brain works & changes for people living with dementia (PLWD) Vision, language & physical changes to expect at moderate dementia State
  • How to adapt your approach to better connect and support PLWD - Positive Physical Approach™ (PPA) + Positive Personal Connectors (PPC) + Positive Action Starters (PAS)
  • Hand-under-Hand® support to connect and support PLWD in different tasks
  • How to connect and engage with someone who is sleeping or unhappy / agitated
  • Approaching and engaging someone with late stage dementia
  • Adapting your approach to for people at varying stages of dementia (All GEMS® States)
  • Understanding sensory changes as dementia progresses
  • Adapting your approach for different stages of dementia and complex situations

Kate Lamont


Kate has over 20 years' experience in working across the healthcare and policy continuum. As an Occupational Therapist Kate has expertise in environmental design to support best practice dementia care. Kate is COPE (Care of People with Dementia in their Environment) trained, has certificate IV in training and assessment and passionate to support carers to enable people with dementia to maintain function and maximise participation in daily activities.

Kathy Kirby


Kathy is a Registered Nurse, with over 20 years' experience working across various specialty areas. Her career has included working in acute, sub-acute, community and aged care settings, including managing a secure dementia unit and establishing a community social program for people living with dementia. Her areas of expertise are in dementia, palliative and acute care as well as clinical leadership.
