Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy Level 2: Pulmonary Rehabilitation

This course is intended for physiotherapists working within the field of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, wanting to further their knowledge and skills in best practice pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) for patients with chronic lung diseases, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Successful participation and completion of this course forms part of the framework for those wishing to pursue the CRPA Titling and specialisation pathway.

At the completion of this course and in combination with course notes, readings and self-directed learning, participants should be able to demonstrate more advanced skills in the provision of pulmonary rehabilitation, particularly patient assessment, exercise prescription and exercise training for people with chronic lung disease.

Learning outcomes

  • Summarise pathophysiology of COPD, exercise physiology and the effects of exercise training.
  • Determine appropriate tools to assess patients referred to PR and competently carry out assessment.
  • Determine and manage an appropriate exercise prescription based on assessment and patient goals.
  • Implement best practice pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) for patients with chronic lung disease.
  • For people with chronic lung disease, demonstrate skills in patient assessment, exercise prescription and exercise training.
  • Identify the effects and variations in delivery of PR for a range of other conditions.
  • Identify a range of exercise interventions and settings for PR.
  • Demonstrate best practice skills in the provision of PR.

Prerequisites

  • This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.
  • This course is recommended for physiotherapists with some years of experience in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy practice and who have undertaken relevant further learning or qualifications in this area.
  • Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy Level 1. Participants must complete the Level 1 course prior to registering for the Level 2 course. An exemption application can be applied for if Level 1 has not been completed and continuous practice area experience, recency of practice and recent CPD can be shown.
