Sport participation for children with disabilities

Key topics covered will include:-

Contemporary models of participation (for physiotherapists)

Why participation in sports and physical activities is restricted in young people with a disability (barriers to participation)

Key components of participation-focused therapy to promote sports participation

Tips for framing reports and planning documents to increase likelihood of funding when the goal is physical activity and sports participation

There will also be a number of inclusive sporting organisations present to provide some more information to therapists!

Sarah Reedman


Dr Sarah Reedman is an early career clinician-researcher and physiotherapist with appointments at Cerebral Palsy Alliance and The University of Queensland. Dr Reedman's research spans participation-focused physical activity interventions and intensive goal-directed motor training for children with cerebral palsy, for which she has worked on over 5 randomized controlled trials and has obtained $140K as Chief Investigator in competitive research funding. Dr Reedman is the current secretary of the NSW APA National Paediatric Group Committee and has clinical experience across education, non-government, and private sector physiotherapy practice.

Gaj Panagoda


Dr Gaj Panagoda is a paediatric rehabilitation specialist and general paediatrician. After 10 years working in the public hospital system, he has now changed focus to community-based disability care. He has a clinical and policy role at the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, where he is establishing a disability service across 20 Aboriginal health clinics.His private practice, Superkid Rehab, collaborates closely with allied health teams and recreation providers.He is also a Visiting Senior Medical Officer at the Queensland Paediatric Rehabilitation Service, Queensland Children's Hospital. Dr Panagoda's practical and team-based approach to rehabilitation management is reinforced by his previous work as a physiotherapist and allied health assistant.
