Guidelines for effective treatment of compensable patients

This lecture is aimed at physiotherapists who have started working in private practice and provide treatment to patients with Workers' Compensation or MVA claims, who want to improve their understanding of how physiotherapists are involved in the compensation scheme in WA and what guidelines should be followed to provide effective treatment for their patients.

The lecture will cover the framework of the WA compensation scheme, the stakeholders involved in compensation claims, and treatment philosophy.

Benjamin Ashford


Ben is a Physiotherapist and is currently studying post-graduate Occupational Health and Safety through Curtin University. He qualified as a Physiotherapist from the University of Notre Dame in 2011. He has been working in the Occupational Health Physiotherapy field since graduating, initially as a private practitioner/consultant for an occupational health practice in WA since late 2016 as the in-house health specialist for the primary grain storage and handling business in WA. He has a wide range of experience consulting to and within industry in fields including injury management and worker's compensation, ergonomics, workplace training, pre-employment and functional capacity assessments. He has completed post graduate courses in occupational hygiene, training and assessment and injury management. He is passionate about injury prevention, best practice injury management, training, health technologies and the health benefits of good work.

Benjamin Freeth


Ben graduated from Curtin University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy). He began his physiotherapy career working in private practice, and in 2007 started his first role within the field of Occupational Health. Since 2015 he has worked with Biosymm, which is a Perth-based physiotherapy business that specializes in Occupational Health, and over this time he has helped to establish a telehealth physiotherapy service for early intervention that provides services to over 350 locations across Australia and New Zealand. His main interests within Occupational Health are early intervention services, functional capacity assessments, including comprehensive FCEs, and ergonomic workstation assessments. He has been an accredited ErgoScience PWPE assessor since 2011. He has been a member of the WA chapter of the APA Occupational Health Physiotherapy Australia (OHPA) national group since 2013, and was chair of this chapter from 2017-20.
