2019 Vic Branch Winter Breakfast

Join us at the annual Vic Branch Winter Breakfast, to be held at AAMI Park.

The keynote speaker will be Anne-Marie Hill, presenting 'Encouraging Older People to Exercise - An Evidence Update'.

Physical activity and exercise have strong, established benefits for people aged 60 years and older. However, getting this population sufficiently active remains a serious problem. Health professionals need to encourage all older people, regardless of age or health condition, to engage in a regular activity program that includes cardiovascular, strength and balance components to maintain the highest levels of physical activity possible. To accomplish this, health professionals need to be aware of the dosage of exercise that is recommended, as well as barriers and enablers to exercise for older people, and take these into consideration when prescribing a program.

This presentation will summarise the latest evidence regarding exercise for older people, with particular focus on the benefits of strength training. It will also briefly explore how health professionals can better encourage and support older adults to exercise at an amount and intensity that makes a difference.
