Mobility & Gait retraining - what training principles should we be using in clinical practice?

In order to improve safe mobility for their patients, physiotherapists draw knowledge from a wide range of sources including motor control & learning theories, practical courses, detailed movement analysis research, and neurological & musculoskeletal clinical evidence. As knowledge continues to grow, such a diverse source of knowledge provides challenges for teaching and developing clinical reasoning skills that inform our treatment selections. This is further compounded by many different physical, perceptual, cognitive, and behavioural impairments that impact on mobility and gait in many neurological populations. This lecture summarises several key principles and terminology that could be considered when retraining gait & mobility in many common clinical scenarios. These training principles include some key learning around skill acquisition and retention, physical capacity factors and cognitive & attentional strategies. In these challenging times, we will also discuss ways to build confidence & self-efficacy.

This 40-minute lecture will summarise how these key training principles can influence the design of specific mobility training programs for clinical populations such as Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, and Functional Neurological Disorders. This lecture will be followed by 20 minutes for questions and discussions.
