Presenters

Yvonne Learmonth

Yvonne is a physiotherapist and board member of WA's APA Neurological group. She is a Senior Lecturer and Research Fellow at Murdoch University in Western Australia. Yvonne's teaching and research focuses on helping persons living with neurological conditions maximise their exercise behaviour through education and guideline based exercise programmes. Her presentation will describe a current Perron Institute funded study that is called Changing behaviour towards Aerobic and Strength Exercise (project BASE), a remote exercise programme following MS exercise guidelines underpinned by theories of behaviour change.

Elissa Burton

Elissa is a qualified sports scientist and Senior Research Fellow at Curtin University in Western Australia. Elissa's research focuses on helping older adults to live in their home for as long as they choose, through healthy living strategies. Much of Elissa's work has been with older adults who receive home care services, reablement, preventing falls, and encouraging healthy older adults to participate more in strength and balance training. Her presentation will describe a current NHMRC funded study that she is leading called Balance on the Brain, which is a multi-modal exercise program aimed at improving balance and quality of life and reducing falls for people living with mild cognitive impairment.

Claire Tucak

Claire Tucak is an APA Neurological Physiotherapist and she is currently working as the Senior Physiotherapist at the Perron Institute/Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Western Australia. As part of this role she supports the Spasticity Botoulinum Toxin clinics working with Dr Ghosh and the other neurologists. She has worked in acute neurology/stroke wards, stroke rehab unit and stroke/neurology outpatients and has always had an interest in spasticity management for these patients.

Nicole Lagesse

Nicole has focused her physiotherapy career on helping people who are ageing, have a neurological condition or who live with a disability in the community. She started her own business, Embark Physio, in 2020 to inspire and help these populations to live more physically active lives and challenge their potential. Nicole was looking for a fun fitness activity to create for those living with a neurological condition and luck would have it that she met Nicki from Perth SUP School. Together with their different experiences and backgrounds they co-created Neuro Paddle. Nicole's presentation will tell you how Neuro Paddle differs from a mainstream stand-up paddle boarding class, the clients it is targeted for, and the challenges of starting the class & keeping it running.
