'The ACL-Heal research project'

'The ACL-Heal research project': a collaboration between the Sydney ACL research group and the University of Melbourne.

A case series of 84 patients with acute ACL injuries managed by a novel bracing protocol will be presented. Follow-up ranges from 8 years to 6-months. Ages range from 9 years to 58 years. In this series the patients are treated in a 12-week bracing protocol followed by ACL rehabilitation. Outcome measures included PROMS (patient reported outcome measures), return to sport, follow-up MRI, clinical examination and cross over to ACLR surgery. The results of this study will be presented. We hypothesise that the ACL is capable of healing and that this healing can be facilitated and improved by adopting the novel bracing protocol + rehabilitation paradigm of treatment. A novel acute ACL MRI Classification system will also be presented where we hypothesise that ACL injuries should potentially be considered as a “spectrum of injury” from minimally disrupted injuries (capable of “spontaneous healing” with rehabilitation alone) to moderately injured ACL injuries (capable of having their healing facilitated by the 12-week bracing protocol + rehabilitation) and finally severe ACL injuries where the ACL should be considered “moribund” with severe distortion and displacement of ACL tissues seen on the acute MRI and these patients if they wish to return to high demand pivoting sports should consider referral for ACL repair or reconstructive surgery.
