Australian Physiotherapy Council's Cultural Safety Training for Physiotherapists

The Australian Physiotherapy Council's (APC) online Cultural Safety Training for Physiotherapists has been developed in partnership with The University of Melbourne, and is proudly brought to you by the Australian Physiotherapy Association.


This online program consists of 6 learning modules and will take approximately 5 hours to complete.

The content of the 6 modules is mapped to the five key elements outlined in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Curriculum Framework to ensure full and effective coverage of these elements.

1. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, Contemporary Cultures and Ways of Knowing
2. An Introduction to Cultural Safety for Physiotherapy Practice
3. Best Practice When Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
4. Common Misconceptions about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
5. Recognising and Responding to Racism in Practice
6. What does Cultural Safety in Physiotherapy Practice Look Like?
7. Final assessment

Assessment
Participants must successfully complete the online Cultural Safety Training program and achieve an 80% pass mark in the assessments.


Weekly intake
We have a weekly intake into this course. The APA will email your individualised instructions one week after you register for the course.

Hosted by Melbourne University
The course is provided on the University of Melbourne learning platform.

Access
You will be expected to complete the course within 12 months.

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the history and contemporary culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
  • Explain cultural safety and why Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples are at high risk of feeling culturally unsafe during health care service delivery
  • Recognise important facts that physiotherapists must know to provide culturally appropriate and safe services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
  • Identify errors behind common myths and stereotypes linked to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
  • Recognise racist behaviour and select appropriate strategies to avoid racist behaviour and its impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
  • Apply the principles of culturally safe practice in a range of physiotherapy clinical practice settings

Prerequisites

  • This course is highly recommended for Australian-based and Australian-registered physiotherapists as part of their Career Pathway learning journey. It is suitable as an introductory course for recently graduated physiotherapists or as CPD refresher training for experienced physiotherapists.
