Rural Refresher 2023

This symposium is designed as a refresher for rural members. It will cover areas of Neurological, Musculoskeletal, Cardiorespiratory and Paediatric Physiotherapy.

The symposium will take place on an interactive live online platform, with presentations on topics such as:

- Low back pain in people aged 60 years and over

- ACL reconstruction and intensive supervised rehabilitation: are they necessary?

- Paediatric Chronic Pain; An overview of chronic pain presentations in children and the Support Kids in Pain (SKiP) multi disciplinary pain program including insights to our telehealth services to rural families.

- Research update: Management of cardiorespiratory conditions in the outpatient setting

- Update on exercise prescription for management of people with Parkinson's disease

Presenters

Adrian Traeger


Adrian is a physiotherapist and NHMRC Early Career Fellow. He has a special interest in evidence-based patient communication. Adrian worked in primary care for 10 years before completing a PhD in Medicine from the University of New South Wales. He has published over 70 scientific papers relating to low back pain and patient communication in leading journals such as BMJ, JAMA Internal Medicine, CMAJ, and PLOS Medicine. Adrian's current research focus is on strategies to reduce overdiagnosis of low back pain. He is a full-time Research Fellow at the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health, University of Sydney and teaches at Sydney Medical School.

Joshua Zadro


Dr Joshua Zadro is a Physiotherapist and NHMRC-funded Postdoctoral Researcher. He completed his PhD in 2017 with a research focus on physical activity-based self-management strategies for people with chronic back pain. His current research focus is strategies to reduce low-value care for musculoskeletal conditions. In just over 6 years being research active, he has published 60 journal articles, made over 50 conference presentations across leading national and international conferences in his field, and secured over $1M in research funding.

Sonia Cheng


Dr Sonia Cheng is an early career researcher and Lecturer in the Discipline of Physiotherapy, University of Sydney. She has cardiorespiratory physiotherapy experience across the spectrum of care of medical and surgical patients, including in intensive care and chronic disease management. She was previously the Acute Senior Physiotherapist at Macquarie University Hospital, and has worked at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Westmead Hospital. Her research interests include exercise training, physical activity and behaviour change in people with chronic respiratory and cardiac diseases.

Serene Paul


Dr Serene Paul is a research and teaching academic at The University of Sydney. Her research interest is in improving physical function and increasing sustainability and access to effective exercise interventions for people with Parkinson's disease.

Nicole Haynes


Nicole Haynes is the clinical director of Q Paediatrics, a paediatric private practice in Brisbane. Nicole has worked exclusively with children for over 15yrs and her private work has seen her deliver services within the clinic, community, educational environments and multidicplinary community based clinics. Nicole has been involved with the Support Kids in Pain program for 10 years and spends approximately half her clinical hours working in a paediatric rheumatology clinic. Nicole is involved with both Griffith University and the University of QLD with teaching and assessment of students. As clinical director of Q paediatrics Nicole provides educational and mentoring to staff working exclusively in paediatrics as well as to general musculoskeletal physiotherapists.

Zoe Colman


Zoe Colman is the Senior Pulmonary Rehabilitation physiotherapist at Liverpool Hospital, having held this role since 2018. She is particularly interested in improving the provision of patient-centred, holistic and integrated care for people with chronic respiratory diseases and is currently doing project work in this space with the SWSLHD Integrated Care and Enablers team. Zoe is additionally the current Chair of the NSW Australian Physiotherapy Association Cardiorespiratory Committee.

Huong Nguyen


Huong Nguyen is an Occupational Therapist who has been working specifically in persistent pain since 2012. She works with children, adolescents and adults across various settings, with a special interest in young people. As the Clinical Coordinator for Support Kids in Pain (SKiP), she coordinates SKiP's child and youth multidisciplinary pain clinics and supports the multidisciplinary team including Pain Medicine Specialists, Physio, Psychologists and Occupational Therapists. Huong is also an Allied Health Team Leader / Pain Clinician at the Sunshine Coast Persistent Pain Mangement Service, a public interdisciplinary persistent pain service for Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay. She is very passionate about holistic multidisciplinary persistent pain care, group programs and working across the lifespan, and connecting and supporting individuals to build capacity in the management of persistent pain.

Penny Mackay


Penny is a Clinical Psychologist who has been working in the field of persistent pain since 2011. She has worked across the lifespan in various settings including private practice and with interdisciplinary pain management programs. Penny has been involved with the Support Kids in Pain (SKiP) program for many years, however, two years ago moved from Brisbane to the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland. This has allowed her to experience firsthand some of the unique challenges of providing quality treatment for persistent pain in rural areas. She currently consults out of a country GP practice and runs a telehealth clinic.
