Rescuing the older knee
This course is on a new date of 20th April 2024.
This course will examine osteoarthritis, the signs and symptoms of the osteoarthritic knee and the degenerate meniscus, as well as discussing the long term effects of ACL reconstruction.
It will look at intervention strategies that the physiotherapist can use and will demonstrate the effectiveness of these strategies from evidence in the literature. It will provide simple strategies for patient self-management to help improve function and quality of life for the older knee, minimise painful recurrences and avoid surgery where possible.
This course offers both theory and practical components, exploring recent studies in order to give a greater insight into treating the older knee. Participants will also gain pain management strategies for post knee arthroplasties to assist rehabilitation.
Learning outcomes
- Explain to a patient where their knee pain is coming from and what they can do to help their symptoms
- Assess the static and dynamic alignment of the lower limb in relation to how it affects the knee
- Evaluate quadriceps and gluteal control
- Examine the hip and determine its influence on the knee
- Tape to decrease symptoms of tibiofemoral and patellofemoral osteoarthritis, degenerate medial meniscus, and post operative total knee replacement
- Show the patient how to get out of chair, how to stand, how to ascend and descend stairs
- Design a simple home exercise program
- Provide sufficient evidence to the patient to help empower the patient to self manage
Prerequisites
- This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.

Jenny McConnell
In 2006 Jenny was awarded the prestigious F.E. Johnson Memorial Fellowship by the NSW Sporting Injuries Committee for outstanding achievement by an established researcher in the field of science and medicine in sport. In 2009 Jenny was awarded a member of the Order of Australia honour for service to physiotherapy as a practitioner and researcher, particularly through the development of innovative musculoskeletal pain management techniques and treatment.
