The Australian Government has updated its privacy legislation to include significant changes to the 27-year-old Privacy Act as well as the Criminal Code. Some of the changes, which came into effect in December 2024, will affect the way businesses such as allied health practices operate. This is what you need to know. But businesses should be aware their responsibilities for protecting the privacy of Australians may have broadened under the amendments.

Topics include the use of hyaluronic acid injections to alleviate joint pain, the application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to promote tissue healing, and the recent introduction of nSTRIDE® Autologous Protein Solution (APS) injections in South Australia. nSTRIDE® APS utilizes the patient's own blood to create a concentrated solution rich in anti-inflammatory proteins, aiming to reduce knee joint inflammation and slow cartilage degradation. Additionally, the lecture will cover Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT), developed by Dr. John Lyftogt, which involves injecting a 5% dextrose solution near peripheral nerves to alleviate chronic neuropathic pain. This lecture explores the unique challenges and key considerations involved in supporting the health and performance of female athletes. With an increasing number of women participating in high-performance sport, it is essential that practitioners have an understanding of both sport-specific demands and the broader spectrum of women's health.

Drawing on current evidence and practical experience, participants will learn how to identify and manage common concerns like, pelvic floor dysfunction, pelvic pain and menstrual disorders in a high performance environment.

Specialized Trauma-Focused Physiotherapy
Over nearly 25 years at STARTTS, Veena has specialized in offering trauma-specific physiotherapy services to survivors of refugee trauma and torture. She works across different age groups and with clients who come from diverse cultural backgrounds. Her integrative approach addresses chronic pain by considering the deep emotional suffering imprinted in the body. She combines various techniques to interrupt the chronic pain cycle, improve functioning, and teach self-help skills. This approach is tailored to each individual and works in collaboration with counselling services, reflecting a shared duty of care.
Case Study Illustration Using Integrative Acupuncture: A Healing Tool
Trained and inspired by the late Paula Raymond Yacoub in Integrative Acupuncture (IA), Veena has found this method invaluable in aiding her clients' healing processes at STARTTS. IA has been a powerful and nurturing tool in addressing complex presentations of trauma.
Veena will present a typical case study to illustrate and reflect upon her trauma-focused approach, emphasizing the use of Integrative Acupuncture for clients with multifaceted trauma symptoms.

Consultant Radiologist, Dr Jodie Davey, describes the systematic approach to X-ray interpretation for Orthopaedic/Musculoskeletal conditions including key points for subtle injuries. This event is aimed to improve the knowledge and understanding in Physiotherapists with identifying normal and abnormal features to direct care appropriately.

The widespread availability of pornography in the digital age has significant implications for the physical and psychological health of young people. In the absence of comprehensive sexual education, young people often turn to pornography to learn about sex. This shapes their perceptions, expectations, and behaviors in ways that may not align with healthy or consensual relationships.

Gain an understanding of modern breast cancer surgery techniques such as mammoplasty, chest wall perforator flaps and autologous fat grafting, and how this may affect post op recovery. Understand the different approaches to breast reconstruction including implant based and autologous reconstruction.

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) although not always easily recognised is not an uncommon condition. FND is a condition that shows no speciality bias, presenting across all areas of practice including Emergency Departments and Outpatient Physiotherapy practices. A patient may present with FND as the primary complaint, or it may be comorbid with other conditions.This presentation will troubleshoot features to assist with the early recognition of FND and discuss appropriate management, including common pitfalls. A series of case studies will be presented to highlight and inform Physiotherapists in their respective scopes of practice with the management of these patients.

Managing clients who are recovering from workplace injuries can be complex. Toxic workplace culture and breakdown in relationships in the workplace can impact injury recovery, mental health and negatively affect return to work.

This session will explore workplace factors that can negatively impact injury recovery, the employer's responsibility to provide a psychologically safe workplace, practical solutions for difficult conversations and who else you can refer to, or include, to promote effective injury recovery at work.

The third revision of the ASAP Physiotherapy Guidelines for Safe Acupuncture and Dry Needling and along with the Chinese Medicine Board's Guidelines on Infection Prevention
and Control for Acupuncture and Related Practices (2023) will be discussed along with the revised Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Health Care (2024) and reviewed needle insertion guidelines from the National Health and Medical Research Council's Australian Immunisation Handbook (2025). Reference will also be made to the ADNG's six part interactive online Safety in Acupuncture and Dry Needling Module.

People's understanding of their health and their heath conditions is built on information and experiences that they have gained over time. Explanations provided by clinicians have a key influence on people's understanding of back pain, what they should do about it, and what the likely outcome will be. This creates the potential for clinicians to have a very positive, very negative, or confusing effect on their patients.

This presentation will present evidence about how clinician communication can impact patients. It will discuss opportunities to explore and interpret the patient's story to better understand the way in which they make sense of their problem and the evidence that informs this. It will describe ways in which further evidence can be sought to co-construct a story that makes sense and helps the person to take part in activities that add value and meaning to their lives.
