Project title: The effect of physiotherapy on the prevention and treatment of nosocomial pneumonia for intensive care patients with acquired brain injury

Snapshot: The Seeding Grant funding supported Shane’s PhD project, a randomised control trial of 144 subjects in intensive care following an acute brain injury.

Results: The results showed that regular respiratory physiotherapy (in addition to routine medical care) did not prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia or reduce the length of mechanical ventilation or intensive care unit stay.

The next steps: Due to small numbers, it was not possible to draw any conclusions as to whether or not respiratory physiotherapy hastened recovery from ventilator-associated pneumonia. Further research is required to determine this.

Shane Patman

Associate Professor Shane Patman is a Cardiorespiratory Specialist Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian
College of Physiotherapists in 2009), with his clinical career predominantly focused in critical care. To date he has 32
peer-reviewed publications, presented at multiple overseas conferences, supervised higher education research
students, and peer-reviewed grant applications and more than 180 pre-publication manuscripts.
Shane continues to be actively involved in research, as well as teaching and being an engaged member of the
profession nationally and internationally. He is currently the associate dean of the School of Physiotherapy at the
University of Notre Dame Australia and on the planning committee for the World Confederation for Physical Therapy
Congress 2019 in Geneva.

In 2016, he completed a second term as vice-president of the Australian Physiotherapy Association and in 2017
commenced as chair of the Australian Physiotherapy Council. Additionally, since 2011 he has been the inaugural
president of the International Confederation of Cardiorespiratory Physical Therapists.
