2025 VIC Branch Winter Breakfast

Join us at the annual VIC Branch Winter Breakfast.

Our keynote speaker, Prof Cathy Said, will be presenting 'Falling short: Bridging the gap between evidence and practice in falls prevention'.

Falls are a major health concern in Australia, affecting one in three older adults each year.

Despite strong evidence that falls can be prevented, intervention uptake remains low.

Physiotherapists are uniquely positioned to support falls prevention through risk identification, exercise prescription, and advocacy.

This presentation will provide an overview of recent evidence and guidelines, including the critical role of exercise. It will also explore challenges in implementing falls prevention evidence into practice and consider ways in which physiotherapists can help bridge this gap.

Panel discussion

A panel discussion will follow the presentation. Joining Cathy on the panel are:
- Dr Richard Kane - National Clinical Director of St Vincent's Virtual & Home, Clinical Program Director of Continuing Care at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne
- Stephen Peterson - Consumer Representative

Stephen's role as a consumer representative commenced in January 2019, when he was offered a position on a committee at Safer Care Victoria, focusing on issues affecting the elderly. This role initially was based on Stephen's history of visiting elderly friends in aged care, followed up during the past decade by being a volunteer visitor to two aged care facilities.Over the past six years, in addition to being on numerous Safer Care committees and expert working groups, and continuing, Stephen has become a consumer with other organisations, mostly also focusing on issues affecting elderly people, in particular falls.Stephen's interest in this subject arose from a series of falls his father had, ultimately leading to a fractured hip that he never recovered from. Drawing on this experience, Stephen is now a consumer with the Victorian Falls Prevention Alliance, Rehabilitation Ageing and Independent Living, and the ANZ Hip Fracture Registry. He is also a consumer Investigator on two Medical Research Future Fund projects relating to falls. In addition, through his involvement with other organisations that involve people of this demographic, including as a U3A tutor and visitor to a hospital ward with elderly patients, Stephen is constantly in contact with people at risk of a fall, including some who have had one or more falls.Falls, in hospital, the home, or out and about, is a subject of great interest to him.
