Scar Therapy Practitioner

Presented by specialist physiotherapist Caroline Callister from Restore Therapy UK, this comprehensive course will provide you with confidence and competence to integrate scar therapy techniques to promote improved function and comfort for patients recovering from any surgery, or trauma including burn.

The training includes online theory, two highly practical days of skills development and a post-course case study requirement (2 x 2 treatments) with a library of resources (available for 12 months). A live online lesson for peer-to-peer outcome sharing and an opportunity for any outstanding questions.

You will finish training skilled in a comprehensive program of manual modalities for professional treatment and self-scar care. Skills you will develop on this course:
Specialist scar massage with adaptions for scar classifications, symptoms and stage of maturation
Active and passive scar stretch
Negative Pressure Therapy for scars (cupping)
Intraoral techniques for facial and neck injuries
Kinesiology taping taster for scar development
Self-scar care

Course specific details: Online registration for re-course theory is activated four weeks before the in-person dates

  • Case study Submission (2 x 2 treatments): Melbourne 23/6/26
  • Live Zoom (optional will be recorded): Melbourne 30/6/26 7pm-8.30pm AEST

Learning outcomes

  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of scar tissue: Evaluate scar mobility, sensitivity, pain, fascial restriction, and functional impact across post surgical, trauma and burn presentations. Identify scar classification, maturation stage, adhesions, tethering, and biomechanical consequences on movement and loading. Integrate findings into clinical documentation and treatment planning.
  • Apply evidence informed scar massage techniques safely and effectively: Deliver specialist scar massage to improve tissue pliability, reduce symptoms, and optimise functional outcomes. Adapt technique selection, depth, direction and dose based on scar type, healing stage, and patient response.
  • Integrate active and passive scar stretching to enhance mobility: Perform targeted stretch techniques to address restricted tissue glide and functional range limitations. Combine movement-based stretch with breathwork to support neuromyofascial release.
  • Use adjunct clinical tools for scar mobilisation: Apply Negative Pressure Therapy (cupping) for safe, progressive mobilisation of superficial and deep restrictions. Implement introductory kinesiology taping strategies to influence scar development, alignment and support functional movement. Deliver intraoral techniques appropriately for facial, jaw and neck scarring affecting movement, speech, or comfort.
  • Teach effective self management strategies: Prescribe evidence-informed self-scar care including massage, movement, and symptom management approaches. Tailor advice for diverse scar presentations, including heightened sensitivity, altered sensation, stiffness, or cosmetic concern.
  • Apply clinical reasoning across all stages of healing: Modify treatment dosage, technique choice and therapeutic goals from acute through to mature scar tissue. Understand contraindications and red flags relevant to physiotherapy practice, including risk based decision-making around load, pressure and technique progression
  • Integrate scar therapy within broader physiotherapy goals: Relate scar restrictions to movement dysfunction, kinetic chain impact, pain, altered biomechanics and compensatory patterns. Incorporate scar-specific interventions into wider rehabilitation plans to restore movement, function and participation.
  • Evaluate treatment outcomes through structured case studies: Assess change in symptoms, mobility, function, tissue quality and patient reported outcomes across a series of treatments
