Adult gait and running analysis and retraining for people with neurological conditions
This course provides in-depth insight into higher level mobility analysis and retraining post-neurological injury in the adult population. It includes gait and running analysis and retraining. The course combines a lecture day, covering both paediatric and adult components, and a practical day devoted exclusively to neurological issues. You should have some experience in treating the neurological population with gait and mobility limitations.
Learning outcomes
- Understand the impact on neurological injury on mobility
- Understand the impact of speed and age on gait performance
- Understand an impairment-focused approach to gait analysis, and gain further knowledge of video-based observational gait analysis
- Understand the biomechanical features of gait disorders in people with stroke, acquired brain/traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy and/or Parkinson's disease
- Assess and prescribe exercise to improve walking and higher level mobility (with a focus on running) in people with neurological conditions
Prerequisites
- This course is available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists and may be also available to other AHPRA registered practitioners.

Gavin Williams
Prof Gavin Williams PhD FACP has worked in neurological rehabilitation for almost 35 years. He is the inaugural Professor of Physiotherapy Rehabilitation, a joint position appointed between Epworth Healthcare and The University of Melbourne. In this role, Gavin works clinically in the neurological rehabilitation unit at 0.5EFT and in a research role at 0.5EFT. Since he began working at the Epworth Hospital 30 years ago, he has developed a program to teach advanced gait and running skills to people with neurological injuries. This program led to his doctoral studies titled The development of a high-level mobility assessment tool (HiMAT) for people with traumatic brain injury'. Since that time he has become a world leader in the assessment, classification and treatment of mobility limitations following traumatic brain injury. Gavin was awarded Fellowship to the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2011. He has over 180 peer-reviewed journal publications and over 200 international and national conference presentations. He was also involved in the development of a new classification system for Paralympic athletics which was implemented at the London Paralympics.
Noula Gibson
Noula Gibson, PhD is a senior physiotherapist and research coordinator for Perth Children's Hospital. Noula has an interest in supporting fun, physical activity opportunities for children with disabilities. She was instrumental in developing a research project and receiving $300, 000 in grant funding to investigate a running intervention for children with cerebral palsy, with the aim of improving the motor skill of running and increasing activity and participation. The trial, ”X-celerate-Running in Cerebral Palsy”, offered a PhD study for which Noula supervised the PhD candidate. Since publication of this work , Noula has developed and delivered over 15 workshops, nationally and internationally on the program, including many for the APA. Noula's current physical activity focus is working with consumers and other stakeholders to develop the running program for other chronic conditions of childhood, and FrameRunning in WA as both a competitive sport and recreational opportunity. She is a level 2 accredited running coach.
