NSW Clinical Practice Day: Pain Management

Hosted by the NSW Branch and the NSW Pain Committee

Join us for a day of learning, connection and professional development. The NSW Clinical Practice Day: Pain Management will focus on contemporary pain physiotherapy clinical reasoning, approaches to maintaining clinician wellbeing and managing patient distress and exploring career directions. The day will feature expert presenters, interactive sessions and practical clinical insights.

Key Sessions:

Dealing with Burnout and Maintaining Self-Care with Donna McCade and Ruth Hennessy
Put a spring back into your step this Spring – take a self-care break and learn evidence-based ways to refresh, recharge and refuel your battery and maximise your wellbeing at work as well as understand what you can do to reduce your risk of burnout.

Supporting Patients who are Experiencing Distress with Ryan McGrath
People experiencing pain, injury, illness, or disability often experience psychological distress, including, at times, thoughts of suicide. This session will explore the important role physiotherapists can play in recognising and responding to distress within their scope of practice. Participants will develop practical skills in having supportive conversations, identifying when additional support is needed, and responding safely and compassionately while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

Sustaining Yourself in Pain Practice with Ryan McGrath and Sophie Shephard
Building on the previous session, this interactive session will explore the unique challenges of working in pain management. Through reflection and discussion, participants will identify practical strategies to support their own wellbeing in their clinical context while considering how their clinical approach, expectations, and ways of working can contribute to more sustainable practice (e.g. I will also touch on some of the challenges of uncertainty and complexity and getting out of the 'fixer' mindset when working with pain).

Exploring the Clinical Reasoning Model for Pain with Tania Gardner and Tim Austin
Chronic pain can be challenging to assess and manage, particularly when biological, psychological, and social factors all play a role. In this practical and interactive session, Tania and Tim will share a new clinical reasoning tool designed to support a biopsychosocial approach to chronic pain care. Through a real-world case study, participants will work through the framework step-by-step, exploring how experienced clinicians think through complex presentations and make treatment decisions. There will be plenty of opportunities for discussion, questions, and sharing clinical experiences.

Connect with colleagues, expand your professional network, and be part of important conversations shaping the future of pain physiotherapy.
