Presenters
Joleen Rose
Joleen has taken a meandering path to first become a physiotherapist and then a Chief Allied Health Informatics Officer. Prior to completing high school Joleen had completed her pyrotechnicians apprenticeship becoming the youngest qualified pyrotechnician in Victoria. She then went on to Study a Bachelor of Science majoring in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne and completed an honours year in Influenza research while working as an Editorial Assistant for CSIRO. After she completed her science degree she worked on vaccine trials and then moved to the UK to work as a diagnostic immunologist. Missing human interaction in her job, she returned to Melbourne to Study Physiotherapy again at the University of Melbourne. After graduating she commenced her career at Austin Health becoming a senior ICU physiotherapist and a research assistant to Sue Berney working on large international ICU rehabilitation trials. In 2022 she became the inaugural Chief Allied Health Informatics at Austin Health. Today, she continues to work both in this role and clinically.
Mark Merolli
A/Prof Mark Merolli is a well-known expert in digital health technology and informatics. One of the few dual-credentialed physio health informaticians. He is a faculty member of the Physiotherapy Department at the University of Melbourne. Mark's a Titled APA Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist and Titled Research Physiotherapist. He wears a lot of hats relevant to our session - small private practice owner, academic, and digital health consultant. Mark is very passionate and a leading voice about the digital advancement and education of the physio workforce.
Barry Nguyen
Barry Nguyen is a physiotherapist, software engineer, and founder of CliniScribe, an AI platform built for allied health private practice. After almost two decades in physiotherapy, Barry founded CliniScribe because he had lived the problem first-hand: clinical documentation, admin overload, and fragmented systems quietly draining clinician energy and reducing time for meaningful patient care.After almost two decades in physiotherapy, Barry founded CliniScribe because he had lived the problem first-hand: clinical documentation, admin overload, and fragmented systems quietly draining clinician energy and reducing time for meaningful patient care.His work focuses on making the paperwork layer almost invisible while keeping AI practical, secure, reliable, and grounded in real-world healthcare workflows. He also hosts The Business of Allied Health, a podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube, where he explores the business, technology, and leadership challenges shaping allied health.His background spans clinical practice, software engineering, entrepreneurship, and digital health, including product work in an ASX-listed SaaS environment, co-founding HealthAide, which supported more than 340,000 patients, and contributing as an adviser to the Australian Digital Health Agency and member of the inaugural APA AI Advisory Group. CliniScribe has been recognised through MAP25 at the University of Melbourne and APA PitchFest. In 2020, Barry was named one of Australia's Most Influential Asian-Australians Under 40.His long-term goal is simple: help clinicians spend less time fighting systems and more time doing meaningful clinical work.
Darren Ross
Darren Ross is a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist with over 25 years of clinical experience and a longstanding passion for innovation at the intersection of healthcare and technology.As CEO and Clinical Director of PatientNotes, Darren leads one of the fastest-growing AI-powered clinical documentation platforms in allied health, serving clinics globally. PatientNotes uses artificial intelligence to streamline clinical note-writing, letters, and reporting — helping clinicians reclaim time and reduce administrative burden without compromising documentation quality.Alongside his work at PatientNotes, Darren continues to practise and lead as Partner and Clinical Director at Physica Physiotherapy, a multi-location allied health group across Melbourne's eastern suburbs.Darren holds a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from La Trobe University and a Masters of Manipulative Physiotherapy, and has been an active contributor to the APA — including serving as Vice Chair of the Business Group and former Chair of the Musculoskeletal Branch.
