Can systems thinking inform more effective prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders?

There is now substantial evidence supporting the need to manage MSD risk using a systems thinking-based approach. But what exactly is 'systems thinking' and how can this approach be applied in practice? Findings from application of a systems thinking analysis method in road transport will be shared.

Bronwen Otto


Bronwen is a Specialist Occupational Health Physiotherapist (as award by the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2009), with extensive industry experience in prevention and management of work-related injuries and illness. She has primarily worked in the coal mining industry, in a diverse range of operational and strategic roles, including at a national and international level. Bronwen holds a Master of Ergonomics, Safety and Health from La Trobe University where she is currently completing her PhD supported by a Research Training Program scholarship, on preventing work-related musculoskeletal and stress-related mental health disorders in the trucking industry, using systems thinking and implementation science.
