Hormones in Motion: Targeted Physiotherapy skills for women aged 35+ approaching Perimenopause, Menopause and beyond
'The Midlife Shift'
Hormonal transitions can present as complex presentations from the age of 35+ onwards. This course will help physiotherapists decode not only the multitude of musculoskeletal effects but the extensive systemic signs of perimenopause and post menopause. This course will arm the clinician with practical, evidence-based tools to confidently support females approaching perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause, which can manifest from 35 years of age.
Learning outcomes
- Understand the minutiae of each sex hormone and the physiological effect on all the body systems of a perimenopausal and postmenopausal
- Assess the client from a hormonal aspect; pre/peri/post menopausal
- Become confident in the use of rating scales to ascertain symptoms, e.g. Greene climacteric scale and other menopause rating scales
- Include the above screening forms as part of intake forms
- Establish a network of menopause educated professionals to refer to e.g. GPs, psychologists, personal trainers
- Familiarise self with AMS (Australian Menopause Society) guidelines as well as other international ones
- Understand the clinical implications of how perimenopause and menopause impact all other body systems
- Recognize common musculoskeletal issues associated with perimenopause and menopause, especially:
a. frozen shoulder
b. wrist/hand pathology (carpal tunnel)
c. glute/hip tendinopathy
d. foot pathologies (plantar fasciopathy)
e. osteopenia/osteoporosis - Create treatment protocols for these common disorders
- Understand hormonal and non-hormonal options, evidence-based and empirical data. Describe the various options of hormonal therapy available
- Comprehend and advise non-treatment options such as lifestyle modification tips to assist women, e.g sleep tips, stress management strategies and the importance of social connection to enable a holistic approach to their health management
