2026 TAS Branch End of Year Breakfast

We look forward to welcoming you to the TAS Branch End of Year Breakfast, to be held at Rydges Hobart.

Our keynote speaker, Professor Tasha Stanton, will be presenting 'Innovations for osteoarthritis care: Exploring pain science education, perceptual trickery, and thinking outside the square'.

Osteoarthritic pain is often assumed to be driven solely by structural damage to the joint and surrounding tissues. However, pain levels hold a tenuous relationship with the degree of structural damage, people without pain or injury show ‘pathological' changes on imaging, and people with severe osteoarthritic changes experience marked improvements in pain with exercise. Taken together, these findings suggest that we need to re-think such an assumption; osteoarthritis is clearly more than just the joint.

This talk will explore the contemporary understanding of osteoarthritis as a whole body process, discussing evidence spanning pain science, systematic inflammation, and psychosocial contributors, supporting a need to reconceptualise how we think about osteoarthritis and pain. Further, it will explore why and how innovations in perceptual science might help our patients to move more, all while enjoying the experience. Finally, this talk will share new initiatives that “think outside the square”, to revolutionise delivery of care for osteoarthritis. Specifically, we will explore potential options to subjugate the current suboptimal access to traditional care experienced by those with osteoarthritis.
