College Knowledge Exchange - Advancing Research Excellence - October 2026

This Research College Knowledge Exchange (CKE) session will provide feature presentations from two ACP Fellows who have recently been awarded the Specialist Research Physiotherapist credential. Presenters will share their area of research, followed by an opportunity for questions, discussion, and peer engagement. Physiotherapists with an interest in research, research translation and advancing clinical practice are encouraged to attend.

Dr Daniel Harvie, FACP - Pain & perception: A Closer look at why we hurt

It is a strange thing to have a body that talks to us through sensations. How these sensations relate to what is actually happening in the body is complicated. Yet complicated doesn't mean nonsensical. By taking a closer look at experiences like pain, we can make more sense of that complexity, and in turn we can better manage it. My research has been part of this new science of persistent pain and what to do about it, and this talk will give a brief overview of this journey

Professor Jia Han, FACP - Proprioception: From Laboratory to Clinical Practice

This presentation traces my 15-year research journey in proprioception and neuromuscular control—from foundational laboratory discoveries to clinical translation. I will share insights into the multi-modal and site-specific nature of proprioception, the clinical impact of position and force sense deficits, and evidence-based approaches to assessment and intervention across musculoskeletal conditions—including chronic ankle instability, low back pain, Achilles tendinopathy and knee osteoarthritis—as well as neurological populations such as stroke and Parkinson's disease. This will highlight how clinicians can integrate proprioceptive training into practice through functional, task-specific and patient-tailored rehabilitation approaches.

Professor Rob Orr, MACP - Load Carriage for Tactical Populations

Tactical personnel, inclusive of military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel, are required to carry external loads weighing from 10kg to over 45kg, as an occupational requirement. Intended to protect these personnel and support their task capability, these loads are known to cause acute and chronic injuries, impede task performance, and have ultimately led to task and mission failure and long term medical consequences. To mitigate these potential risks of injury and performance decrements, understanding the tactical load carriage context and optimising the load carriage conditioning / reconditioning requirements of these personnel is vital. This session will explore evidence regarding both the impacts of load weight and, more importantly, contextual factors (like speed of movement and terrain traversed) on load carriage capability. Injuries associated with load carriage will be discussed as will potential negative task impacts, and relationships between fitness and load carriage capability. Finally, the latest evidence on optimal load carriage conditioning and reconditioning requirements will be presented in an easy to apply and practical framework.

I have been a physiotherapist for 19 years, and am currently a teaching and research academic and the director on the Masters of Advanced Clinical Physiotherapy program at Adelaide University. I am a Specialist Research Physiotherapist (FACP) and a titled Pain Physiotherapist (MACP, M. Musc. Sports Phys. Ther.). I am the 2023 ‘South Australian Tall Poppy young scientist of the year' and lead research programs in the domain of clinical pain science

Professor Jia Han, FACP, is Professor of Physiotherapy and Program Director at Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences, with research focusing on neuromuscular control and proprioception. He directs MINeCoRE, holds adjunct roles at Australian universities, and has authored over 150 peer [1] reviewed publications. He serves as Associate Editor for Q1 journals and holds leadership positions as Vice President of the National Sport Physiotherapy Committee (CPTA) and President of the Orthopedic Rehabilitation Committee (CSOS). Identified as a top 3 most productive proprioception researcher globally, he has secured over AUD 3 million in competitive grants and received the Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researcher award five years consecutively (2021–2025)

Robin Orr


Professor Rob Orr is Professor within the Doctor of Physiotherapy program at Bond University andFounder, and now Director of, the Tactical Research Unit (TRU). Drawing on 23 years of service in theAustralian Army, where he served as an infantry soldier, Physical Training Instructor, physiotherapist, and Human Performance Officer, his work focuses on enhancing the health, performance, and resilience of military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other first responders. Professor Orr has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and over 70 technical reports, current supervises 17 higher degree research candidates, and collaborates internationally with defence ,law enforcement, and emergency services organisations. His research interests include tactical load carriage, physical conditioning, rehabilitation, injury prevention, occupational performance, and physical employment standards. He has served in editorial and leadership roles across several national and international organisations, including as Editor of the National Strength and Conditioning Association Tactical Strength and Conditioning Technical Report, and on numerous scientific, professional, and conference committees. His contributions have been recognised through awards for research impact, publications, presentations, and teaching excellence. A frequent keynote speaker at international conferences, Professor Orr is ranked among the world's top 2% of cited researchers and is recognised as a leading international researcher intactical and law enforcement performance..
