Beyond Hydro: Harnessing Aquatic Physio & Therapeutic Swimming for people with neuro conditions

Please join us for this event where Julie and Shannon will present:

1. Julie Bowman will present an evidence-informed and clinically relevant exploration of how the aquatic environment can be used to achieve positive outcomes for people living with neurological conditions. Drawing on current research, real-world case examples and videos of practical treatment strategies, this session will provide new ideas and extend thinking for how physios can apply in practice: aquatic physiotherapy – and swimming - to improve function, health and well-being, and sustained participation in physical activity for people with a range of neurological conditions.

2. Shannon Cheary will present on understanding how cardiorespiratory fitness training is implemented within sub-acute stroke, the role of aquatic physiotherapy and how aquatic physiotherapy is experienced by people following stroke.

Face to face lecture:
This is a face to face lecture only and will not be recorded or live streamed.

Presenters

Julie Bowman:

Julie Bowman is a physiotherapist with more than 35 years' experience in aquatic physiotherapy, as well as a health and disability sector leader committed to improving participation, health and quality of life for people living with disability.
Julie has a long-standing interest in aquatic physiotherapy and the role of swimming and physical activity as lifelong health-promoting interventions. She is an Associate Investigator with AquaCollab4Health, a research study exploring the physical and mental health impacts of aquatic exercise. She is pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Queensland exploring how evidence-based aquatic and land-based approaches can be translated into sustained physical activity participation for people living with disability who have high support needs.

Drawing on extensive clinical, leadership and system reform experience, Julie brings a unique perspective that bridges neuro-rehabilitation, NDIS (aquatic) physiotherapeutic supports, community participation and innovative models of care. Her work highlights how the clinically-reasoned use of the medium of the aquatic environment combined with the skills of a ‘thinking' physiotherapist, can support recovery, rehabilitation, function improvement, social connection, quality of life, sport performance and lifelong engagement in physical activity.

Shannon Cheary:

Shannon is a Senior Physiotherapist with over 20 years clinical experience within neurological rehabilitation. She works part-time in the Division of Rehabilitation, Aged & Palliative Care, located at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide and is currently undertaking a part-time PhD through Flinders University, investigating the use of aquatic physiotherapy within sub-acute stroke.
