Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy - Assessment and Management

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common and often persistent complication of cancer treatment, with symptoms including numbness, tingling, pain, weakness and balance impairment that can significantly affect function and quality of life. This presentation will provide an overview of the current understanding of CIPN, including its clinical presentation, assessment and impact on physical function.

Susanna will discuss the latest evidence for the prevention and management of CIPN, with a particular focus on the emerging role of exercise and rehabilitation. The session will provide practical insights for physiotherapists working with people during and following cancer treatment.

Susanna Park

Associate Professor Susanna Park is a neuroscientist and clinician-researcher with expertise in peripheral neuropathy and neuromuscular disorders. Based at the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney, she leads a multidisciplinary research program investigating the assessment, treatment and risk factors associated with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).Susanna has been extensively involved in research examining the neurological and functional consequences of cancer treatment, including the development of approaches to detect and assess chemotherapy-related nerve damage. Her research has also explored exercise and rehabilitation as potential strategies to improve function and reduce the impact of CIPN in cancer survivors. She has authored more than 125 peer-reviewed publications and has been involved in national and international research collaborations in peripheral neuropathy and cancer survivorship. Her work has contributed to the growing evidence base informing the assessment and management of CIPN.
