College Knowledge Exchange - Advancing Research Excellence - February 2027

This Research College Knowledge Exchange (CKE) session will provide feature presentations from ACP Fellows who have been awarded the Specialist Research Physiotherapist credential. Presenters will share their area of research, followed by an opportunity for questions, discussion, and peer engagement. Physiotherapists with an interest in research, research translation and advancing clinical practice are encouraged to attend

Dr Ishanka Weerasekara - Reducing Research Waste in Physiotherapy: Moving from 'More' Research to 'Better' Research

This presentation explores the idea that more research does not necessarily mean better evidence, better physiotherapy practice, or better health outcomes. Research waste can occur when studies duplicate existing knowledge, address questions of limited relevance, use inadequate methods, fail to consider existing evidence, or produce findings that are never translated into practice. Drawing on my own journey from clinical research to evidence synthesis, co-design and research leadership, I will reflect on how my understanding of research value has evolved. The central message is that advancing physiotherapy does not simply require more research, but better, more relevant and more usable research that addresses meaningful questions, informs clinical practice, and ultimately contributes to better health outcomes

Adjunct Professor Sean Mungovan - From Clinical Questions to Interdisciplinary Research

This presentation provides an overview of selected clinical research work undertaken across men's health and urology, orthopaedics and osteoarthritis, cardiothoracic surgery, respiratory rehabilitation, high performance sport, and emerging research into microplastics and human health. Drawing on examples from these research programs, the presentation will reflect on the evolution of clinical research questions, the contribution of interdisciplinary collaborations and the opportunities and challenges associated with conducting research within clinical healthcare environments.

The presentation will provide an opportunity to:

1. Explore selected clinical research programs across different areas of physiotherapy and their evolution from clinical observations to interdisciplinary investigations.

2. Examine the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex clinical research questions and integrating clinical and laboratory-based investigations.

3. Reflect on the challenges, lessons learned and emerging opportunities associated with developing and sustaining clinically embedded research programmes
