Multimorbidity in cancer: a growing challenge and the road ahead

Nine out of 10 cancer survivors live with at least one other chronic condition, and this multimorbidity is associated with poorer health outcomes, increased healthcare utilisation, and reduced quality of life. Currently healthcare for these Australians is fragmented, with limited integration between tertiary cancer care and primary care, and significant systemic barriers to meaningful change.

In this presentation, medical oncologist and Chair of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) multimorbidity group Professor Bogda Koczwara AM and COSA Multimorbidity Research Fellow Dr Chad Han will explore the implications of multimorbidity for contemporary cancer care, highlight current challenges, ongoing work and consider future directions for research and clinical practice. The session will invite reflection on how multidisciplinary teams, including physiotherapists, can work together to deliver more integrated, person-centred care for people living with cancer and multiple health conditions.

Delivered in collaboration with the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA).

Professor Koczwara is an internationally recognised clinician researcher with expertise in cancer survivorship and supportive care. She established one of the first cancer survivorship program in Australia and the longest running cancer survivorship scientific meeting in the world. Her research has contributed to key advances in the field of survivorship epidemiology, symptom monitoring, self-management support, and the use of patient reported outcomes in cancer. In April 2025 she was appointed as an inaugural Director of the Australian Research Centre for Cancer Survivorship. The Centre, created through a joint investment of $40 million from University of New South Wales and Cancer Council NSW, was established in 2024 with a focus on improving the care and wellbeing of cancer survivors through transformative and impactful research.
