What to say, when to say it.... and how #comms4grads

Therapeutic alliance (patient rapport) is one of the most potent modifiers of how effective you are as a clinician.

We all want to be the reason our patient gets back to running, playing with their kids or bending to unload the dishwasher. The key to you being your patients' hero is often not what you do, but what they do and what you say to make them do it (and keep doing it).

Effective communication can be the difference between a patient for life (an empowering and enlightening experience that facilitates behaviour change), and a patient in strife (confused, frightened, and lost). Plus, great communication doesn't just help patient relationships...

Clinician researchers Nic Saraceni and Kevin Wernli aim to lead an interactive and engaging evening discussing all things communication and patient rapport. Packed with evidence-based research, patient examples, harmful vs. helpful quizzes, tips on timeframes, and of course, when and how to explain pain. Our goal is for you to go home equipped with simple tools and example questions you can start to implement in your clinical practice the next day (without ‘painsplaining' the pain away)!

Nic Saraceni and Kevin Wernli are both currently in the final year of their Ph.D. at Curtin University. And they both have a passion for providing simple, honest and effective healthcare.
