It's not all in the lungs: Dysfunctional breathing, chronic cough and vocal cord dysfunction

This lecture will explore alternate causes of common respiratory symptoms such as breathlessness, cough and wheeze.

Dr Rosalba Courtney, a world renowned specialist in dysfunctional breathing, will present on the 'clinical significance of a multidimensional model of dysfunctional breathing'.

Associate Professor Julia Maclean, a clinical specialist in speech pathology, will explore the physiology and management of 'chronic cough and vocal cord dysfunction'.

Presenters

Julia Maclean


Julia is the Clinical Specialist in Speech Pathology at St George Hospital. Her clinical work is in Head and Neck Surgery, ENT, Oncology and Respiratory. Additionally, she holds a post-doctoral research position within the Motility Unit, Department of Gastroenterology and is a Conjoint Associate Professor at the UNSW. Julia obtained her PhD in 2010, in swallowing following head and neck surgery, and her MSc Medicine in 2006, examining swallowing in Chronic Airflow Limitation. As a member of the St George Swallow Centre, this group has had continuous competitive grant funding for 25 years to fund their research into swallowing disorders.

Rosalba Courtney


Dr. Rosalba Courtney ND, DO, PhD is an osteopath with a broad experience in breathing therapy. She was one of the first practitioners trained in the Buteyko Method 1990s. She received a PhD from RMIT University for her research on the topic of 'Dysfunctional Breathing: Its Parameters, Measurement and Clinical Relevance' in 2011. She is internationally recognized for her work in this field, having published over 15 peer reviewed articles and book chapters on this topic. Rosalba has presented at many national and international conferences. She is actively involved in research and mentoring of osteopathic students. Rosalba is renowned for her ability to synthesis complex information from the scientific literature to extract its practical significance for the clinician. Rosalba conducts training programs for practitioners in Integrative Breathing Therapy internationally. She practices in Sydney, Australia.
