Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders

Physiotherapists working in aged care, community settings and acute care hospitals frequently have to manage people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and other movement disorders. This course will improve skills relevant to the assessment and treatment of these disorders. It will cover recent research findings, new medication and other changes in PD management (eg, surgery) and their implications for physiotherapy practice.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease and most common Parkinsonisms
  • Understand the role that medication plays in managing the symptoms of people with Parkinsonisms
  • Further develop assessment and outcomes model to analyse and discriminate within the motor and non¬-motor impairments
  • Further develop a treatment tool kit to assist patients with Parkinsonisms effectively
  • Reflect on the role of education and self-management models to be drive self-efficacy
  • Reflect on the role of early intervention verse later intervention and the likely treatment effect and burden of disease

Prerequisites

  • This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.

Melissa McConaghy


Melissa is a clinician, educator, author, entrepreneur and thought leader. She is a Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists. Academically, she also holds a Master of Health Science (Neurological Physiotherapy) and Grad Certificate in Public Health. Melissa has previously chaired the Neurology Chapter in NSW and was the NSW National Representative for the Australian Physiotherapy Association. She is currently sits on the Executive Committee of INPA, part of the World Congress of Physical Therapy. Melissa has a broad experience in community neuro rehabilitation and is director of both Advance Rehab Centre, a neurological outpatient and home based rehab facility and PD Warrior, an exercise approach for people with Parkinson's that is licensed in 10 countries. As a thought leader, Melissa has led the way creating exercise programs incorporating intensive neuroplasticity training principles for people with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, stroke and brain injury.
