A Churchill Fellowship Journey – Exploring Neuro-Oncology rehabilitation paradigms abroad

Mena, who is a titled neurological physiotherapist working at one of the largest tertiary hospitals (Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital) in Perth, was 1 of 14 successful WA applicants to be awarded the Churchill Fellowship in November 2019.

Churchill fellowships offer a diverse range of people from all walks of life an opportunity to travel overseas for four to eight weeks to explore a topic or issue that they are passionate about. No qualifications are required in order to apply for a Churchill Fellowship, and the topic of your proposed project is limitless, provided a benefit to Australia and willingness to share your findings with the Australian community is evident. For more information go to www.churchilltrust.com.au

Originally planned for 2019 but delayed by COVID Mena was finally able to depart February 1st, 2023. She visited 20 sites across 10 cities in Italy, the United Kingdom, United States and Canada.

The main aims of this project were:
1. To visit state-of-the-art facilities and services around the world to learn about their neuro-oncology specific rehabilitation programs, discharge services, neurosurgical pathways, and current research
2. To bring this knowledge back to WA and put a business case for a neuro-oncology service / pathway that will improve QOL in patients with brain and spinal cancer.

Mena is very excited to share her experiences abroad in this webinar and also to provide some insight for any individual interested in applying for the Churchill Fellowship.
