The Great Debate —to operate or not to operate? Lumbar spine, Foot and Ankle and Shoulder conditions

Following on from the hugely successful Symposium: The Great Debate - To operate or not to operate? (Knee and Hip conditions), the Australian College of Physiotherapists and Physio Educators are proud to bring Part 2 of the Great Debate Symposium Series.
The decision about whether to operate or not, is often a complex one. Treatment options should be based on a balance of benefits, harms and treatment alternatives, and presented to the patient by the healthcare practitioner in a way that encourages the patient to consider their own individual priorities. This patient-centred care approach requires a partnership in healthcare and is reliant on the clinician's specific knowledge of the risks, harms and alternatives as well as their interpersonal and unbiased communication skills.
This virtual symposium will explore current research literature combined with expert opinion about the possible advantages and disadvantages of common interventions to manage shoulder, ankle and lumbar spine conditions.
Each symposium session will include presentations by Specialist Physiotherapists or recognised physiotherapist experts in addition to a specialist orthopaedic surgeon or medical specialists and or researchers in the relevant area. These expert presenters will then join together on a panel to answer questions submitted live by symposium attendees.
Confirmed Opening Presenter: Professor Rachelle Buchbinder
Professor Buchbinder is a Rheumatologist and Clinical Epidemiologist. She is the Director of the Monash-Cabrini Department of Musculoskeletal Health and Clinical Epidemiology at Cabrini Hospital and a Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Monash University. She will provide an overview of the 'true value' of specific medical practices commonly employed in the current Australian health care system.

- Dr Rob Laird, Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, Melbourne
- Mr Matthew Beard, Lead Physiotherapist, Spinal Assessment Clinic, Central Adelaide Local Health Network – SA Health
- Dr Guy Buchanan, Specialist Anaesthetist and Specialist Pain Medicine Physician, Metro Pain Group
- Mr Ian Harris, Titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, Brisbane
Rob and Matthew will discuss spine dysfunction management and efficient service delivery models for chronic spinal pain management.
Dr Guy Buchanan will then join a neurosurgeon to present operative management techniques and pain modulation options for lumbar spine presentations.
Confirmed Foot & Ankle presenters include:
- Mr Daniel Goldbloom, Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic Surgeon will present operative decision making and management of commonly encountered foot and ankle conditions.
- Dr Sue Mayes, Physiotherapist , Director of Artistic Health at The Australian Ballet and Adjunct Research Fellow at La Trobe University will present non operative management of the foot and ankle complex.
Other exciting presenters include specialist orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists, are soon to be announced who will present on commonly encountered shoulder conditions and non-operative and operative management options.
