Face to face lecture
This is a face to face lecture only and will not be recorded or live streamed.
Physiotherapy is both a rewarding and demanding profession. As physiotherapists, we regularly encounter patients experiencing physical, emotional and psychological distress. Listening, validating, supporting and offering empathy and compassion are key elements of the therapeutic relationship, however this emotional load can carry a cost. The cost of physical and emotional exhaustion, burnout, vicarious trauma and moral injury, and ultimately, the cost of attrition.
Self-care, the practice of looking after ourselves and meeting our own needs, is an essential life skill for practitioner wellbeing. It is also an ethical and professional responsibility, supporting client safety.
In this webinar, we discuss self-care through the framework of context, knowledge building and capacity building. Participants will hear knowledge relevant to the physiotherapy context and will be guided thought strategies that can be implemented to support their own wellbeing.
Caring for ourselves is not indulgence; it is what allows us to keep caring for others.
This Research College Knowledge Exchange (CKE) session will provide feature presentations from two ACP Fellows who have recently been awarded the Specialist Research Physiotherapist credential. Presenters will share their area of research, followed by an opportunity for questions, discussion, and peer engagement. Physiotherapists with an interest in research, research translation and advancing clinical practice are encouraged to attend.
Professor Phil Newman - Confidently Uncertain: From Feet to Fighter Jets
Clinical decisions are rarely made with complete information. Drawing on more than 30 years of clinical practice and two decades of teaching and research, Professor Phil Newman uses two very different research journeys, predicting and preventing medial tibial stress syndrome and understanding neck loading in fast-jet aircrew, to explore how evidence can reinforce, refine or challenge what we think we know. Through screening, injury prediction, prevention and rehabilitation, the session will challenge clinicians to consider how they weigh evidence, question assumptions and make better decisions when there is no single right answer
Professor Suzanne Gough - Beyond Clinical Skills: Rethinking Expertise in Physiotherapy Practice
Drawing on over two decades of healthcare research, Professor Suzanne Gough will explore the role of reflexivity in navigating complexity and uncertainty in healthcare. Integrating research in simulation-based education, human factors, video-reflexivity and error recognition, this body of work positions reflexivity as central to clinical expertise. Critically examining our actions, assumptions, relationships and contexts can deepen professional learning, strengthen adaptability and connection, to ultimately support safer, more effective physiotherapy practice
The balance workshop has been developed to complement the work of Professor Cathie Sherrington and colleagues (Sherrington et al 2016) that provides clear evidence-based exercise guidelines to successfully improve balance and prevent falls. While these guidelines are widely available, implementing this evidence in clinical practice continues to be a major clinical challenge. This workshop provides a theoretical background to the understanding of balance and postural adjustments. Video analysis is used to discuss the effective assessment and analysis of balance impairments to provide the basis for targeted interventions. The recent meta-analyses of effective exercise to improve balance and reduce falls are reviewed in detail so that attendees have a thorough understanding of the features of effective balance training. The changes to balance seen in older people and people with neurological conditions are discussed, as well as the evidence for balance training in people with common neurological conditions. This workshop assists clinicians to develop evidence-based solutions for people with balance difficulties by incorporating practical sessions exploring strategies for training balance that are challenging, of sufficiently high dosage and safe. The workshop uses lectures, practical sessions, video analysis and clinical sessions with patients in order to provide clinicians with many strategies for effective balance training with people of differing levels of disability.
This event is Part 2 of the Manual Therapy Workshop led by Andrew Webster FACP and will serve as a continuation from his workshop held back in January. You can expect this workshop to hone your practical skills that can potentially be implemented in your current or future clinical practice. Andrew will dicuss a joint 'roll and slide' mechanics serving as a framework to transition into getting hands-on into spinal techniques for the cervical, throacic and lumbar regions. You will also be educated on the importance of clinicain-centred ergonomics and methods to execute techniques effectively and efficiently to not only make you a great physiotherapist in the clinical space but also to protect career longevity.
Missed out on Part 1? Not to worry, prior to the event, we will provide you a with quick refresher on what you may have missed.

Please join us for the third and final session in our Pain Lecture Series for 2026. This year, we will be exploring the interaction between pain and sleep, and we will be focussing on the role of physiotherapy in the assessment and management of sleep problems for people experiencing chronic pain.
In this session, Dr Daniel Sullivan will be focussing on how we can treat disrupted sleep and insomnia. Daniel will explore the principles of sleep hygiene and how we, as physiotherapists, can use these skills and strategies with our patients when they have chronic pain and disrupted sleep. Daniel will also discuss the different treatment options for insomnia, including CBTi. He will detail how physiotherapists might be able to upskill in this practice, as well as when and where to refer on for support from sleep clinicians.
We look forward to welcoming you to the TAS Branch End of Year Breakfast, to be held at Rydges Hobart.
Our keynote speaker, Professor Tasha Stanton, will be presenting 'Innovations for osteoarthritis care: Exploring pain science education, perceptual trickery, and thinking outside the square'.
Osteoarthritic pain is often assumed to be driven solely by structural damage to the joint and surrounding tissues. However, pain levels hold a tenuous relationship with the degree of structural damage, people without pain or injury show ‘pathological' changes on imaging, and people with severe osteoarthritic changes experience marked improvements in pain with exercise. Taken together, these findings suggest that we need to re-think such an assumption; osteoarthritis is clearly more than just the joint.
This talk will explore the contemporary understanding of osteoarthritis as a whole body process, discussing evidence spanning pain science, systematic inflammation, and psychosocial contributors, supporting a need to reconceptualise how we think about osteoarthritis and pain. Further, it will explore why and how innovations in perceptual science might help our patients to move more, all while enjoying the experience. Finally, this talk will share new initiatives that “think outside the square”, to revolutionise delivery of care for osteoarthritis. Specifically, we will explore potential options to subjugate the current suboptimal access to traditional care experienced by those with osteoarthritis.
