This course (both theory and practical) is designed for physiotherapists working in the aquatic environment with adult patients with a range of more complex neurological conditions and disabilities. The course has an emphasis on hands-on clinical management and functional
rehabilitation and aims to provide physiotherapists with an opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills relevant to adult neurological
aquatic practice.
Pain management, range of movement, strength, strategies to optimise function and for some fitness are included. Risk management issues, infection control and equipment specific to the populations will be discussed. Participation in the course should enhance both knowledge and skills but primarily expand your treatment options and motivate and inspire your practices.
The course provides an opportunity for the multitude of practitioners who want to offer (or are offering) expert/advanced clinical management of the most complex, difficult neurological client population.
This course aims to help physiotherapists augment and consolidate their competence across the key areas of differential diagnosis and evidence-informed management of people with low back pain. This aligns with 'Deliberate Practice' - the process of embracing opportunity to grow in professional skill and knowledge. Clinical Reasoning is underpinned by Clinical Anatomy and, together with selected Clinical Examination tests, is used by physiotherapists in clinical decision-making about treatment or management strategies for low back pain.
Neurological Examination of patients can be challenging due to wide variability in clinical presentation, therefore this aspect of Clinical Examination receives focused attention in this course. Accuracy around neurological findings is imperative to identify deficits to which treatment can be directed, to differentiate neuropathic, nociceptive or nociplastic pain, for reports to doctors and to step up care to meet the Australian Clinical Care Standards for low back pain. Therapeutic exercise is a key tool in the challenge to help patients embrace self-efficacy strategies that can reduce their pain and improve their quality of life, therefore this course includes an Exercise Workshop session informed by research and clinical reasoning.
To facilitate contextual learning a detailed case presentation is used in the final session. This allows for integration of the day's learning and to comprehensively pull together evidence-informed aspects of patient management. This includes: diagnosis, appraisal of evidence, radiology, pain science education, strategic sign- and symptom-based treatment, self-management strategies, selecting and teaching exercises, habit stacking, documenting change and reporting to healthcare colleagues.
The Neurological Physiotherapy Level 2 Course is at Intermediate level aligned to the Competence Framework.
A physiotherapy practitioner at this level can independently manage clients with more complex presentations. It would suit physiotherapists:
- With some years of experience in this area of practice
- Who have undertaken relevant further learning or qualification in this area of practice
The Course uses a mix of teaching and learning approaches with a focus on active learning and learner-centred strategies. These include PowerPoint presentations, practicals and facilitated case-based group discussions. Within the Course, participants will apply and demonstrate their enhanced knowledge, and translate this into practical application. A range of case studies and practical sessions will allow the presenters to work within their experience.
This course is designed to improve your existing knowledge and skills developed from the Paediatric Level 1 course and/or established during your own clinical practice. The Paediatric Level 2 course offers an opportunity to refine your clinical reasoning skills from infancy to adolescence and apply these to skills to numerous paediatric conditions.
Using a case-based approach, you will learn about many different assessment tools and their applicability to age, conditions and settings. Intervention approaches will also be taught alongside decision making regarding applicability to the goals and needs of a paediatric patient and their family. The Paediatric Level 2 course also includes principles of health promotion, sporting performance and musculoskeletal assessment and management.
Sue Mayes has led the medical team of The Australian Ballet for over 20 years and recently finished her PhD on hip joint health in professional ballet dancers. The Australian Ballet have developed a successful approach to managing and preventing hip joint injury that has resulted in no lost-time hip joint injuries in the past 5 years and no hip joint surgery for more than 10 years. The ´hip joint in dance' course will provide a review of the current hip joint research and its application to clinical decision making and management of hip joint pain in dancers. This practical workshop will demonstrate hip joint assessment and treatment techniques and participants will learn hip exercises and exercise progressions that could be applied to any individual with hip joint pain.
This 2 day practical workshop will provide clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of the impact of limited mobility and gravity on body shape distortion, and the importance of timely postural care, specifically therapeutic supported lying. This course is suitable for clinicians of all levels of capability who work with children and adults with physical disability.
Clinicians will gain an understanding of who would benefit from therapeutic supported lying, why timely education and implementation is important, understand the research and theory of key therapeutic supported lying practices and be able to apply the key principles to their clients – from a preventative, maintenance and improvement perspective. Additional aspects such as risk assessment (covering topics such as pressure, thermal comfort, pain…) and individualising practices will be covered. Demonstration and practical opportunities will be provided throughout the workshop.
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) although not always easily recognised is not an uncommon condition. FND is a condition that shows no speciality bias, presenting across all areas of practice including Emergency Departments and Outpatient Physiotherapy practices. A patient may present with FND as the primary complaint, or it may be comorbid with other conditions.This presentation will troubleshoot features to assist with the early recognition of FND and discuss appropriate management, including common pitfalls. A series of case studies will be presented to highlight and inform Physiotherapists in their respective scopes of practice with the management of these patients.
This two day intensively practical course teaches a simplified assessment and treatment approach to a very biomechanically complex area of the ribs, thoracic spine and cervical spine.

During adolescence, developing dancers undergo significant change in the volume, intensity and styles of dance training they undertake, especially if undertaking pre-professional training. Research highlights a sharp increase in the incidence of injuries at the onset and during pubertal development. Additionally, there is a high incidence of injury among both adolescent and professional ballet dancers with a prevalence of these injuries occurring in the lower extremity and spine. In some instances more than half the injuries sustained by pre-professional dancers are recurrent and retired professional dancers continue to experience muscle and joint pain.
This course will help physiotherapists who are managing dancers and their injuries, to gain an understanding of dance specific measures in order to ensure appropriate management of a dancer's complaint. An understanding of the relationship between range of motion and anatomical anomalies as risk factors for injury development, being able to identify variations in knee and pelvic angles in fondu and temps levés to help address injury concerns and identifying appropriate testing for inclusion in prepointe assessments that may give a better indication of pointe readiness are all essential skills for physiotherapists who wish to work with dancers. An appropriate exercise prescription is a vital link between assessment findings, injury management, return to class and injury prevention. It is the aim of this course to help physiotherapists develop these skills
People's understanding of their health and their heath conditions is built on information and experiences that they have gained over time. Explanations provided by clinicians have a key influence on people's understanding of back pain, what they should do about it, and what the likely outcome will be. This creates the potential for clinicians to have a very positive, very negative, or confusing effect on their patients.
This presentation will present evidence about how clinician communication can impact patients. It will discuss opportunities to explore and interpret the patient's story to better understand the way in which they make sense of their problem and the evidence that informs this. It will describe ways in which further evidence can be sought to co-construct a story that makes sense and helps the person to take part in activities that add value and meaning to their lives.

This course has been designed to provide an opportunity for physiotherapists to develop their practical skills and clinical reasoning associated with content taught in the online Level 2 Women's Pelvic Health Part A course.
This practical course is structured around a ‘clinical case studies' format. Physiotherapists will be guided through a number of case studies involving role play of the initial pelvic health patient interview, brainstorming differential diagnoses, choosing appropriate objective assessments to carry out, interpretation of assessment results (including sensation related bladder diary, vaginal / digital rectal examination results and reports from multidisciplinary health providers), and developing an appropriate treatment plan.
In addition, physiotherapists will have the opportunity to learn the necessary procedures (including infection control, obtaining informed consent and practical skills) required to perform internal vaginal examination and digital rectal examination for the purpose of pelvic floor assessment, as well as Transcutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (TTNS) for the management of OAB.

Are you frustrated by the low back and leg pain patients who seem to get worse with treatment? Is there something else you can do? The answer is most definitely yes!
The aim of this workshop is to:
* present some background hypotheses as to why certain individuals with chronic low back and leg pain do not respond to treatment,
* develop skills in static and dynamic lower extremity, pelvic and lumbar spine biomechanical and gait assessment.
* give the physiotherapist some strategies to identify these individuals so they can implement more appropriate treatment techniques
* demonstrate how to unload chronic low back and leg symptoms, to minimise/eliminate symptoms therapist
* use surface EMG for neuro-muscular re-education for specific training of the stabilising muscles
* provide simple strategies a therapist can give to a patient to empower the patient to self manage.
Physiotherapists are increasingly using dry needling for pain management and thereby improving function in conjunction with other physiotherapy approaches. This structured course meets the national APA and AHPRA recommendations for physiotherapists to practice dry needling safely for musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries.
The sound knowledge of indications and contraindications for dry needling requires appropriate assessment and treatment skills. This course is designed to provide physiotherapists an opportunity to improve knowledge and skills of dry needling, and make them aware of guidelines for safe dry needling practices in a range of musculoskeletal conditions.
The Dry Needling Physiotherapy Level 1 course consists of two separate parts:

This course is designed for those who are commencing work in or returning to work in neurological physiotherapy or recent graduates who would like to consolidate their knowledge about neurological physiotherapy. The online modules cover; the principles of neuroplasticity, motor learning and task and context specific practice, the relative contributions of impairments to activity limitations after stroke and a clinical reasoning approach that applies this knowledge to the analysis of movement problems and intervention planning, and principles for maximising engagement in and amounts of practice in rehabilitation. The face-to-face content covers the tasks of bed mobility, sitting, sit to stand, standing, walking and arm function. For each of these activities, video case studies are used to guide discussions of movement analysis and relevant outcome measures and evidence-based intervention, practical sessions will be used to enforce the principles of effective set-up of training for these tasks.
This course will be held at SA Women's & Children's Hospital
Serial casting of the lower limb is used frequently in paediatric physiotherapy practice to manage contracture and optimise musculoskeletal alignment in children following neurological injury and/or with neurodisability.
The application of, and more specifically, the removal of a serial cast using a cast saw is often a distressing and potentially traumatic experience for a child or young person, especially given that patients with neurodisability often have otherimpairments or past trauma that may contribute to their distress on having a cast with a cast saw. Alternative methods of cast removal that does not involve a cast saw, including specific casting material selection, will be explored and practiced. Such management methods may be more suitable for paediatric patients compared with traditional removal using a cast saw.
At the end of this course, participants will:
- Demonstrate knowledge of serial casting options in the paediatric population
- Describe how to assess a paediatric patient to determine whether serial casting is indicated
- Be able to identify appropriate options for treatment, and through a process of clinical reasoning, identify most appropriate serial casting technique as part of the child's holistic management plan.
