International Pride Day: APA statement

As celebrations for Pride Month draw to a close, we acknowledge the 55th anniversary of the start of the International Gay Rights Movement in 1969.

Today and beyond, the Australian Physiotherapy Association is steadfast in its commitment to fostering a profession that champions diversity and inclusion.

We strive to eliminate discrimination, harassment, and vilification based on gender identity, sexual orientation, and innate variations in sex characteristics.

Our dedication to equity is reflected in our advocacy for safe, affirming healthcare environments and our proactive efforts to dismantle policies and practices that perpetuate exclusion and prejudice against LGBTQIA+ communities.

Our approach to diversity and inclusion is comprehensive and multifaceted. We aim to:

Promote inclusive healthcare: Advocate for healthcare practices that are safe, respectful, and affirming for individuals with LGBTQIA+ identities and experiences.

Support and educate: Provide resources and training to our members to ensure they are well-equipped to offer inclusive care and to understand and address the unique challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Foster a culture of belonging: Create an environment within our association and the broader physiotherapy profession where people who are LGBTQIA+ feel valued and supported, and where diversity is celebrated.

Implement accountability measures: Establish clear goals and metrics to assess our progress in promoting LGBTQIA+ inclusion and equity, ensuring transparency and accountability in our efforts.
