INMOTION 01 Apr, 2026

Physiotherapy across three generations from the same family

Physiotherapy careers often run in families but rarely across three generations working in different eras of the profession. For Jill Morrison, her daughter Shan Morrison and grandson Xander Clausen, physiotherapy is not just a career path – it is a shared language that has evolved across six decades of healthcare.

When Xander Clausen APAM sits down to Sunday dinner with his family, the conversation often drifts towards case studies, clinical reasoning and tricky patient presentations.

Standing strong

APA Policy and Government Relations Senior Policy Advisor Mirjana Jovetic explains why it’s so important to champion access to falls prevention programs.

Falls prevention access and funding is a key policy and government relations priority for the APA.

Physiotherapy-led prevention reduces falls and fractures. It improves strength, balance, confidence and mobility, while enhancing a person’s participation and quality of life.

It also reduces system costs through avoided hospitalisations and surgery.

Fall prevention is not optional

Falls are not random events.

They arise from reduced strength and power, impaired balance, slower reaction time, pain, medication effects, chronic disease and environmental hazards.

Effective prevention demands more than exercise alone.

It requires clinical reasoning, risk stratification, behavioural insight and sustained engagement over time. Preventive falls care must be evidence-based.

Yarning about pelvic health

A recent recipient of a 2025 Seeding Grant is investigating the lived experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women regarding pelvic health.
