Smoothing the path for referrals

A digital platform that streamlines and speeds up the process of referrals for scans and specialist care won the 2025 Physiotherapy Research Foundation Physio Pitchfest People’s Choice Award at the APASC25 conference last year.

When sports physiotherapist Daniel Patterson APAM worked in pro sport as a young physiotherapist, the multidisciplinary team that surrounded him included medical staff who were always on hand to write prescriptions and referrals for imaging or for specialist care when needed.

Shaping the future of advanced practice physiotherapy

ADVANCED PRACTICE (INCLUDING EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT) From early inspirations to leadership in advanced practice physiotherapy, Pippa Flanagan’s career has been defined by seizing opportunities and embracing challenges.

When Pippa Flanagan MACP reflects on the moment she first became aware of physiotherapy, she laughs at the simplicity of it.

As a teenager watching Home and Away, Pippa saw a character receiving hydrotherapy after a spinal injury and immediately wanted to know ‘what that job was’.

APASC25: Innovative app wins PRF Physio Pitchfest

A simple, easy-to-tailor exercise app has won the coveted 2025 Physiotherapy Research Foundation (PRF) Physio Pitchfest Judges’ Award.

Plasticise was developed by physiotherapists Sarah Turner APAM and Kumbelin Levin APAM and allows physiotherapists to film their patient doing an exact exercise, while providing verbal cues, so the patient can watch it back and follow along at home.

Friends of physiotherapy

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned in my time as president is that advocacy is never achieved alone.

Every meeting in Canberra, every policy submission occurs because we build alliances—with politicians, with community groups, with researchers, with consumers and, most importantly, with each other as physiotherapists.

This year the APA has been challenged with significant threats to practice viability.

Physios on the front line for falls

When an older person calls triple zero after a fall, it’s often the start of a long hospital journey. A groundbreaking program in Queensland is proving that this no longer has to be the case. Melissa Mitchell talks to senior physiotherapist Natalie Davis to learn more.

For senior physiotherapist Natalie Davis APAM, no two days are ever the same.

Connecting at home and overseas

In May this year, I travelled to Tokyo alongside APA National President Dr Rik Dawson and Chair of the Board Mark Round to attend the World Physiotherapy Congress 2025.

The scale of the congress made the event a brilliant opportunity for us to represent Australia on a global stage and to network and connect with physiotherapists from around the world.

During our time in Tokyo, we were able to meet with board members and senior executives from numerous countries including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Nepal, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Building up the rural workforce

Rural physiotherapists are recognised for their diverse skill set, their ingenuity and their rarity. Melissa Trudinger and Brendan Bugeja explore how to increase both the number of physiotherapists in the regions and the opportunities for them to thrive there.

In regional Australia, especially in rural and remote communities, disparities in access to healthcare lead to health challenges and health inequity.
