Physios on the front line for falls

When an older person calls triple zero after a fall, it’s often the start of a long hospital journey. A groundbreaking program in Queensland is proving that this no longer has to be the case. Melissa Mitchell talks to senior physiotherapist Natalie Davis to learn more.

For senior physiotherapist Natalie Davis APAM, no two days are ever the same.

Boost mediation analysis

Researchers from the University of Exeter and collaborators across the UK and Australia analysed data from the BOOST trial, a major physiotherapy study that tested a 12-week program for older adults with painful walking due to lumbar spinal stenosis. Lead author Dr Lianne Wood and author Dr Esther Williamson agreed to answer some questions about the research.

Can you start by briefly summarising the design and findings of the BOOST study?

Physiotherapy is an investment, not a cost

In a health system under increasing pressure, physiotherapy is too often seen as a discretionary service—an optional extra—rather than a foundational pillar of the health system.

As we have seen recently with the NDIS and aged care sectors, this perception is not only inaccurate but dangerous.

Physiotherapy is not a cost to be trimmed; it is an investment in independence, quality of life and long-term sustainability.

Across the country, we are witnessing a troubling trend.

Let's break down barriers

Happy New Year. I hope you’ve enjoyed a refreshing break over the summer and are recharged for the challenges of 2025.

As your president-elect, I’ve often been asked why I chose to become a physiotherapist—a question that piques the interest of media and members alike.

Like many physiotherapists, my journey began with a positive encounter with the physiotherapy profession during my youth.
