Non-invasive interventions for burn scars

A group of physiotherapists in Brazil collaborated on a review of the evidence about physiotherapy interventions for burn scars. Lead author Cíntia Helena Santuzzi answers some questions about the systematic review.

What are common symptoms that can arise from burn scars?

The most common symptoms are acute or persisted pain (paraesthesia) and itching. Large scars may also lead to scar contractures and aesthetic issues that generate psychological and social effects.

Design and dedication

Physiotherapists are adept at using their skills beyond the clinical setting. To succeed in business, all it takes is one idea—an insight gleaned from practice that genuinely fills a gap in the market. Antony Hirst conducts a Q&A with Daniel Jones.

While working in private practice, Daniel Jones found that he was constantly treating ailments caused by wearing flat-
soled thongs.

In a light bulb moment, he set out to develop a thong with orthotic support, creating the first prototypes in his grandparents’ shed.

Chatbot technology has potential to transform brain injury rehabilitation

Typically, rehabilitation for adults with traumatic brain injuries includes setting patient-centred goals and motivational support.

However, access to face-to-face rehabilitation can be limited and patients can lose sight of their goals in between clinical appointments, slowing down their rehab and recovery.

To help overcome this, researchers at Flinders University have developed a chatbot called RehabChat to help patients stay motivated and and maintain momentum between clinical appointments.

Let’s talk about birth trauma

I became an aunt in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. My sister’s first baby was a wanted, welcomed new addition to the family.

This period in our lives, which had plenty of joy and wonder, was marred by two things.

One is obvious—COVID restrictions in Melbourne meant that time spent with our new family member was very limited and the new mum’s mental wellbeing took a battering as a result.

The other reason is sadly quite common but not often talked about: birth trauma.
