A physiotherapist assisting a patient with low back pain
INMOTION 18 Aug, 2022

Backing out of an emergency

Low back pain is the fifth most common reason for emergency department (ED) presentations in Australia.

As cases continue to grow, the condition is placing ED staff and resources under mounting pressure at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has already brought many hospitals to a point of crisis.

We know, however, that most people presenting with low back pain in ED are triaged as non-serious/non-urgent and many could be managed by a physiotherapist.

The importance of beach accessibility

The importance of beach accessibility

Most Australians take their access to the beach for granted, but a Physiotherapy Research Foundation-funded project by Queensland researcher Sasha Job aims to make beaches more accessible to Australians with disabilities.

More than 85 per cent of Australians live within 50 kilometres of the beach but for many people with disabilities and mobility issues, it’s inaccessible.

The barriers are just too big.

Vale Glenys Davies, 1941–2021

The many friends and colleagues of Glenys Davies (nee Witham) at home and abroad will be saddened to hear of her death on 17 November 2021.

In 1963, shortly after graduation, Glenys Davies’s curiosity about the world took her via boat to Europe, where she volunteered in an Austrian hostel housing Hungarian refugees.

For three months she cleaned, answered phones and helped in the kitchen.

After Austria, Glenys spent more than a year gaining skills and experience as a physiotherapist in the UK and Denmark.

A many-faceted career

At 80 years old, Winsome Baker was, until very recently, one of Australia’s oldest practising physiotherapists. A conversation about her career and the changes she has seen over her years of practice.

When Winsome Baker, APAM, was in high school, her mother took her to a career adviser who suggested to her that she think about physiotherapy, occupational therapy or kindergarten teaching.

After visiting a careers expo, she saw plaster of Paris being applied by physiotherapists and decided that that was what she wanted to do.

Perseverance pays off for SA physios

Advocacy is often a long process before tangible change is seen—and after many years of consistent lobbying led by the South Australian branch of the APA, there is some great news for physiotherapists, especially given the financial challenges faced over the past few months.

The team in South Australia has successfully won a 12-year argument for an increase in payment given to treating physiotherapists by Return to Work SA (RTWSA, formerly known as WorkCoverSA).

NDIS debate a hot topic of talks

I recently had the honour of attending TRANSFORM 2019 as the invited speaker for the disability clinical stream. This was the first time disability has been represented with its own clinical stream, and it was fitting that the focus of the content was on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and its integration with clinical practice.

‘We need to understand that, like all things, there are the challenges and threats that lie in an evolving scheme that is yet to fully stabilise.’
